Winnipeggers in the area of a North End playground where a 13-year-old girl was stabbed Monday expressed fear and dismay over the incident.
On Wednesday, city police reported a girl was stabbed multiple times on the 200 block of McKenzie Street, after she and a 12-year-old playmate were allegedly accosted and robbed.
A 13-year-old girl has since been charged.
Several people around the area Wednesday said the attack took place at the playground behind Strathcona School.
A few hours after the news broke, area resident Raylene Sanderson, who regularly visits the site, said learning about the incident shook her.
“It’s scary… I have kids who are almost all grown up but I worry for other kids because there is a lot of bad stuff going around,” said Sanderson, while visiting a friend at the site.
It is especially disturbing to hear of such violence being experienced by someone so young, she added.
“It is a nice place (here), but there’s just too much stuff going (on)… She’s going to be traumatized for life, that poor kid.”
Police said officers were called to the 600 block of Alfred Avenue for a reported stabbing around 7 p.m. Monday. They found an injured girl and gave her emergency medical care before an ambulance arrived. She was taken to the hospital in unstable condition, later upgraded to stable.
Police found a suspect in the area and arrested her, while also locating a knife.
Officers believe the suspect approached the girl and her companion, then allegedly “viciously attacked” and robbed them without provocation, according to a Winnipeg Police Service news release.
Some residents who live near the park said they saw blood on a sidewalk across the street, which they believed was connected to the incident. Several dark stains were visible on the sidewalk Wednesday afternoon.
An employee at a nearby store, who wished to remain anonymous, said the injured girl came to the store calling for help.
“There was a lot of blood out here, so I had to call (911). I believe it was my duty,” he said, adding he was unaware of any other details.
A 13-year-old girl from Winnipeg is charged with aggravated assault, two counts each of robbery and two counts of uttering threats to cause death or bodily harm and assaulting a peace officer. She was detained in custody.
Police ask anyone with information on the incident to call the unit at 204-986-6219 or Crime Stoppers anonymously at 204-786-8477.
