For first-time cruisers or first-time ocean cruisers, an Australia/New Zealand itinerary is an ideal choice.

Cruising the world’s waterways is one of the most seamless and enjoyable ways to travel. You unpack once, visit multiple countries, cities and towns and everything is taken care of for you. Michelle Black, managing director, Viking Australia & New Zealand share her tips for first time cruisers.

Every cruise line provides a unique offering. For example, Viking is destination focused with no kids and no casinos. It’s not for everyone, so do your research and work with your travel agent to find the cruise that’s right for you.

For first-time cruisers or first-time ocean cruisers, an Australia/New Zealand itinerary is an ideal choice. It’s close to home, and our modern spacious ships cater for just 930 passengers.

If you think ocean cruising is not for you, or are prone to seasickness, a river cruise is a great choice. You’ll wake up in a new city every day, there is limited sailing time and the rivers are calm – most of the time you wouldn’t even know you are on the water.

Once you have booked your cruise, be sure to plan ahead. If there is a particular port or excursion you are interested in, be sure to reserve a spot before you depart New Zealand as some excursions can book out. You might be having afternoon tea with a local family, enjoying a cooking class in a castle, or taking a bike ride through vineyards, so some excursions have limited numbers due to space and capacity restrictions.

Once on board, listen to the daily port talk to understand what is in store for the next day to plan accordingly and set your expectations. And remember to give yourself time to relax.

You’ll be spoilt for choice with activities on board and on shore, but remember to take time out to read a book, unwind in the spa or relax on a sun lounger
