Fire crews are working to put out a number of “spot fires” on the side of a state highway in Marlborough.

A Fire and Emergency spokesperson said five units, including two tankers, were putting out “small spot fires” in multiple locations on the side of Rapaura Rd (State Highway 62).

“No idea what the cause is at this point in time,” the spokesperson said.

Crews from RNZAF Base Woodbourne, Renwick, Waihopai and Wairau Valley stations and a rural unit from Blenheim responded to the fires about 4.50pm.

No buildings were currently at risk, but Fire and Emergency were stopping eastbound traffic on the highway at the Jackons Rd intersection, the spokesperson said.
