Three people have been charged with burglary and dangerous driving after fleeing police at a “high speed” through Ōtara, Auckland on Monday morning.

Just after 2am on Monday, police were alerted to a car speeding on East Tamaki Road, Ōtara, heading towards the motorway.

Counties Manukau east area prevention manager, Inspector Rakana Cook said the car failed to stop when asked, but police did not pursue, instead monitoring its journey with the help of the police Eagle helicopter.

The car eventually stopped on Kaimoana Street, Weymouth, and three men were arrested.

“During the arrest, police located a number of stolen items, which were linked to an unreported burglary in East Tamaki late last month,” Cook said.

“Not only are we pleased to have been able to make these arrests so swiftly, but also to be able to return property believed to have been stolen.”

The three men, who are aged between 34 and 38, will appear in the Manukau District Court on Monday.

“This is another example of our staff responding and apprehending those who are committing offending against businesses in our communities and putting the public in harm’s way when driving in this manner,” Cook said.

“Police continue to have no tolerance for this sort of offending, and we will utilise all measures available to us to hold those committing this harm to account.”
