A Queenslander has turned his passion for collecting classic Australian cars into art by creating unique sculptures out of the car parts.
Brisbane painter Mick Brown spent the last 10 years collecting 1970s Holden, Ford and Chrysler cars but recently turned his collection into art.
Brown spent every weekend for nearly a year creating his Shark Rod sculpture, which will go on sale at Gold Coast’s SWELL Sculpture Festival this month.
”Ideally, I’d like to see it in Mick Fanning’s lounge room,” Brown said.
He said he’s loved classic cars and art since he was a boy.
”I guess from an early age I have always been an artist or have mainly been doing oil paintings and then later in life was airbrushing on cars and things like this,” Brown said.

“I like to get my hands dirty and you know, cut out rust and paint cars and the engines and all that stuff as well.”
Brown also made a barbecue out of an old Holden last year, which became popular on TikTok.
As for the shark, Brown said he just woke up one day and decided to do it.
He said he thought the Monaro’s guards would work well as the shark’s gills.

“I also want to be noticeable that it’s not just made of sheet metal, they’re actually car panels that have been welded together to make the shape.”
Brown has plans for more sculptures but isn’t ready to reveal his new ideas just yet.
