Region specific training for real estate agents by the Real Estate Institute of New Zealand (REINZ) has been welcomed by the organisation’s Timaru ambassador.
REINZ ambassador Julian Blanchard said the training given to new and existing real estate agents over the past two years had become more practical and relevant to where agents are located.
“It’s a good option to have, and because of the different ways the training is delivered, agents have the ability to make it specific to region and specific to their interest,” Blanchard said.
“Giving agents region specific training and rural specific training is something I’ve been pushing for.

“There are some things that are different to the work an agent does in Auckland to what an agent does in Timaru.”
Blanchard said the training is constantly evolving, and the way training is delivered has changed since the pandemic began.
“The training has moved to a more virtual space but REINZ is working towards brining back in-person training from next year.”
Blanchard met with REINZ head of education, Chris Campbell, in Timaru on Friday to discuss in-person training from next year and the focus on region specific training.

Campbell said Covid-19 had restricted in-person training and events throughout the country during the second half of 2021.
“Now restrictions have lifted, REINZ is delighted to be back on the ground, hosting events and training in different regions throughout Aotearoa,” Campbell said.
“The real estate landscape is constantly evolving and REINZ updates training and learning modules accordingly – particularly legal and compliance changes. We also provide training on business structure guidance, marketing, and other CPD training.
“To ensure our training is relevant to all learners, we focus on diversifying course material. And localising our face-to-face verifiable training, by working together with real estate professionals and other organisations.”
Campbell said market sentiment had shifted over the past months, but people are still buying and selling homes, and making life decisions.
“Real estate professionals are essential to helping buyers and vendors understand market dynamics to ensure they are making the best decision for themselves.
“The real estate profession is vibrant and flexible and remains an attractive career option for people no matter their stage of life.”

He said according to the Real Estate Authority, in the Canterbury/West Coast regions the number of active real estate licences as of May 31, 2022 was 1,839.
“The Canterbury market has performed really well throughout Covid-19 restrictions and the market headwinds we’ve since experienced.
“Many areas in Canterbury are expanding, which has offered diversity in residential property, and more people are moving to the region due its affordability and increased employment openings.”
Campbell said this is creating more opportunities for real estate professionals across Canterbury – and those looking to enter the profession.
