A Rāhui is in place at Wellington’s Lyall Bay after a woman’s body was found on the beach.

A rāhui is in place at Wellington’s Lyall Bay Beach following a woman’s sudden death at the popular swimming and surfing spot.

A police spokesperson said the woman’s body was discovered on the beach at 7.30am on July 1, near the Maranui Cafe. Her death was not suspicious and had been referred to the Coroner.

Maranui co-owner Bronwyn Kelly said the cafe’s manager told her a customer spotted the body in the sand and raised the alarm.

“Quite a few of our staff were shocked – and I’m sure a few of the customers, too.”

Wellington City Council advised the public on Sunday not to gather kaimoana or enter the water.

The rāhui will lift on July 5.
