The siren at Port Taranaki was part of an evacuation exercise.

An emergency siren that sounded from Port Taranaki on Monday morning was part of an exercise.

The siren, which went off just after 11am, could be heard throughout most of New Plymouth.

A spokesperson for Port Taranaki said the siren, or alarm, was part of a full site evacuation exercise which was part of its regular safety procedures.

Port Taranaki also posted a warning about the impending siren on social media warning people not to be alarmed.
