A police car and another vehicle collided outside a Timaru motel late on Friday.
A witness said they heard a “screech” before the impact.
They then heard police yelling at the driver to get off his phone as they told him to get on the ground outside the Baywatch Motor Lodge on Evans St around 10pm Friday.

It was the second crash outside the motel in as many months – two men were killed on a motorcycle at the end of December.
A police media spokesperson said police and ambulance responded to the Friday night call-out.
“There are no reports of injuries, however the road was closed for about two hours while police investigated and the scene was cleared.”
Police are yet to respond to questions about how the collission happened.
