There will be no Christmas parade in Levin this year due to logistical costs, with Horowhenua District Council supporting other community events.

Santa will instead be at Christmas in the Park at Levin Adventure Park on Saturday, December 9.

Christmas in the Park is a whānau event with something for everyone, including kai, festive treats, live entertainment, games and more.

Along with the playground, a decorated train will also be running.

The council’s chief executive Monique Davidson said not hosting a Christmas parade was a hard call.

“We made a promise to ratepayers that we would tighten our belts and this is one tough decision we made to stick to this promise. There is always a risk that bad weather could rain on the parade and lead to a cancellation, but we would still need to cover the costs in co-ordinating the parade regardless.

“Christmas in the Park will go ahead rain or shine and will provide hours of festive fun for the whole whānau.”

Horowhenua would also embrace the Christmas spirit in other exciting ways.

Pop Up Eats would have a festive flair and make a special visit to Te Awahou Nieuwe Stroom in Foxton, and the council was supporting the Harvey Bowler Avenue of Trees, where trees were decorated by community groups, running from Friday, December 8 to Sunday, December 10 and Santa Paws at Kōwhai Park on Sunday, November 19.

Christmas lights and cheerful flags would decorate the district in early December.

Shannon was still running a Christmas parade on Saturday, December 16, which the council was supporting.

The Shannon Christmas celebrations were at the Shannon Domain and during the celebrations, a Christmas Parade would be held on Stout St.

In Foxton, Merry Main St would be held on Sunday, December 10.
