Jets defeat Lightning 4-2

Vladislav Namestnikov paced the offensive attack with three assists and Connor Hellebuyck made 33 saves as the Winnipeg Jets defeated the Tampa Bay Lightning 4-2 on Tuesday night before a crowd of 14,157 at Canada Life Centre.

The Jets gave up a power-play goal to Steven Stamkos in the first period, but responded with goals from Neal Pionk, Alex Iafallo, Nikolaj Ehlers and Morgan Barron (into the empty net) to improve to 23-9-4 on the season.

The Lightning got a late power play marker from Nikita Kucherov (who had two points) to cut into the lead, but that was as close as they could come.

The Jets open a three-game road trip on Thursday against the San Jose Sharks.

IIU investigating after man allegedly struck in hit-and-run by off-duty Mountie

The province’s civilian police oversight agency is investigating after a Nelson House man was allegedly struck in a hit-and-run by an off-duty RCMP officer.

The Independent Investigation Unit says the Nelson House RCMP detachment were called about a man being hit with a vehicle on the street at about midnight on Dec. 30.

Mounties met with the man who said had been struck, before the officers discovered the alleged driver was an off-duty RCMP officer from another detachment. RCMP then notified the IIU.

The IIU has asked anyone with information or video footage of the incident to call 1-844-677-6060.

Mounties search for two suspects accused in armed robbery

RCMP are searching for a pair of suspects accused in a gunpoint robbery at a home in Ebb and Flow First Nation early on New Year’s Eve.

Ste. Rose du Lac RCMP were called to the home on Provincial Road 278 at about 2:20 a.m. Dec. 31, where they were told five men armed with guns and bear spray had gone onto the property and assaulted the four residents.

The suspects had arrived in a white pickup truck and stole a vehicle, before driving off. One of the residents, a 33-year-old man, was hospitalized in Dauphin before he was taken to Winnipeg, while the other three were treated for the effects of bear spray at the scene.

Mounties have identified Braden Moar, 27, and Mason Moar, 19, as two of the five suspects. The two men from Ebb and Flow are wanted on charges of robbery, aggravated assault and firearms charges.

Hellebuyck’s super December catches eye of NHL

Winnipeg Jets goalie Connor Hellebuyck’s brilliant play last month has not gone unnoticed.

Hellebuyck was named the NHL’s third star for December after going 7-0-2 with a 1.88 goals-against average and .934 save percentage in nine starts. He allowed two or fewer goals in all but one of his December outings.

The 30-year-old Michigan product, who captured the Vezina Trophy in 2019-20 as the NHL’s top netminder, shares second place in the league with 17 wins through 26 total appearances (17-6-3). He also ranks among the league leaders (minimum of 12 games played) in GAA (5th; 2.34) and S% (7th; .919).

Colorado Avalanche centre Nathan MacKinnon paced the NHL with 18 assists and 29 points in 15 game to take first-star honours for December, while Toronto Maple Leafs centre Auston Matthews led the NHL with 15 goals in 12 games to earn the second star.

Woman shot at downtown lounge

Winnipeg police are investigating after a woman was shot at a downtown lounge early Monday.

At about 1:30 a.m., officers responded to a report of a shooting at a lounge on the 200 block of St. Mary Avenue, police said in a news release Tuesday.

The victim, a woman in her 20s, was treated at the scene, then taken to hospital in stable condition.

The suspect fled.

Police believe the victim was an innocent bystander.

Man arrested after toddler ingests drug

A 28-year-old Winnipeg man has been arrested after a toddler is believed to have ingested fentanyl.

On Saturday, the Winnipeg Police Service’s child abuse unit was called to a home in North Point Douglas after residents called 911, reporting a sick child.

The child was transported to hospital in critical condition, but was stabilized after being administered several doses of Narcan, a medication used to reverse or reduce the effects of opioids.

An investigation determined the child inadvertently ingested a substance believed to be fentanyl while they were crawling on the floor of the home, police said in a news release Tuesday.

The 28-year-old man is facing a criminal negligence charge. He was released from custody, but prohibited from attending the child’s residence.

The accused’s name was not released.

Man charged in December killing

A 30-year-old man has been arrested in the death of a 59-year-old Winnipeg man, who died after being assaulted early last month.

On Dec. 9, the Winnipeg Police Service responded to the 100 block of Disraeli Freeway, where they found a man who had been assaulted. The victim, identified by police as Floyd Flett, was rushed to hospital, where he died of his injuries on Dec. 26.

A 30-year-old man is facing a charge of manslaughter, police said in a news release Tuesday. He remains in custody.

The accused’s name was not released.

The relationship between the accused and the victim has not been established, police said.
