Neighbours watched on in horror as firefighters fought to put out a blaze that had engulfed an Auckland home on Wednesday night.

Fire trucks lined Mount Albert’s Ranleigh Rd as smoke billowed into the air from a fire on the suburban street just after 8pm.

One neighbour said she went outside after hearing shouts.

“I could see the flames licking through the tiles [of the roof],” she said.

Trucks lined the street and smoke hung in the air as the house burned.

”It didn’t take long for the fire to take over the front of the house,” she said.

She said she and others on the street were shocked by the blaze.

Firefighters had the fire under control by 9pm, but the front of the house was heavily fire-damaged and smoke was still wafting up into the night sky.
