A man is charged with attempted murder after he allegedly assaulted a woman before biting, punching and kicking RCMP officers who arrested him.

Mounties were sent to a home on Highway 11 in the Rural Municipality of Alexander at about 9:55 p.m. Monday and found a woman suffering from serious injuries outside and a man holding a young girl. The man ran into the home with the child and refused to give her to family members at the scene or police, RCMP said Wednesday.

After allegedly threatening officers and family members, the man put the child down, and an officer grabbed the child and took her to safety. The girl was not hurt, police said.

The suspect rushed towards officers, RCMP said, and officers used a Taser on him, but it had no effect. The man ran out the back of the home and into a shed after allegedly assaulting officers.

A police dog was taken to the yard and found the man hiding inside the shed. He allegedly fought with officers again while being arrested and was taken to hospital as a precaution.

The woman was taken to a nearby hospital and later transported to Winnipeg for further treatment.

Several officers suffered minor injuries, Mounties said, and one officer was treated at a hospital and released.

A 36-year-old man has been charged with attempted murder, assault on a peace officer causing bodily harm, four counts of assault on a peace officer, three counts of uttering threats, resisting arrest and mischief.

RCMP are not naming the man in order to not identify the victims.
