Luke Brock of New Plymouth Boys’ High School has received a call-up to trial for the New Zealand under-19 rowing squad.

Brock, a year 13 student, was one of a small New Plymouth Boys’ rowing contingent that headed to Karapiro for the annual Maadi Cup Regatta with their Clifton Rowing coach Jason Williams at the weekend.

Brock placed fourth in the boys’ U18 single sculls A final and with Clayton Potts, seventh in the A grade final of the double sculls.

New Plymouth Girls’ High School’s Jill Swart also made an A final in the girls’ U18 single sculls. She finished seventh.

In other racing, Sacred Heart Girls’ College student Jesse Pulford won the B final of the girls’ U17 single sculls.

Frances Douglas Memorial College rowers Hamish Perry and Sean Passmore placed third in the B final of the boys’ U18 novice double sculls, and Perry and Noel Prendergast eighth in the B final of the boys’ U15 double sculls.

The majority of New Plymouth school rowers will now switch to their winter sports codes apart from Brock who will continue to row for a few more weeks in preparation for the New Zealand trial at Lake Karapiro later this month.

From there, crews selected will represent New Zealand at the U19 World Rowing Championships in Paris in August.
