Inquiries are under way in Taranaki after police received reports from someone who was concerned a person had fallen into the Waiwhakaiho River.

A police spokesperson said the report was received about 7:40am and during initial inquiries police were yet to determine that someone was actually in the river.

However, several officers are looking along the river, near Egmont Village.

Taranaki has been doused by heavy rain overnight and the Taranaki Regional Council website shows the river, which flows from Taranaki Maunga, was running higher than normal at about 1.98 meters at 8am. The level was down from a 3m high at 1am.
