Fijian police have paid respects to one of their own after his mother, Laisa Maraia Waka, was recently murdered in Christchurch in a random attack, just metres from her home.

Waka was walking along the footpath on Cheyenne St in Sockburn, Christchurch, when she was attacked by a stranger wielding a knife about 4.20pm on June 25.

Waka’s son is police constable Epineri Tunidau. He is a member of the Fiji Police Force based at the Sigatoka Police Station.

In a post on Facebook, Fiji Police Force said a delegation from Fiji Police and New Zealand Police presented their reguregu to Tunidau’s family – which happens in the lead up to a burial, where friends and family come to pay respects.

Fiji Police’s delegation was led by chief administration officer assistant commissioner of police Sakeo Ganivatu. New Zealand Police was represented by senior liaison officer (Pacific) superintendent Glyn Rowland.

Fiji’s commissioner of police brigadier general Sitiveni Qiliho directed that Tunidau be given all necessary support “to help him get through this difficult period”, Fiji Police said.
