RuPaul Drag Race star Jinkx Monsoon is heading into space after being cast in the new series of Doctor Who.
The 35-year-old, who has won two series of the drag competition, will take on a “major role”.
The long-running sci-fi show will see a new Doctor take on the title role in Sex Education’s Ncuti Gatwa, but first former star David Tennant rejoins in a series of specials.
Writer and producer Russell T Davies, who relaunched the series in 2005, also returns to the show which celebrates its 60th anniversary this year.
Monsoon said she was “honoured, thrilled, and utterly excited” to join the show.
“Russell T Davies is a visionary and a brilliant writer– I can’t wait to get into the weeds with him and the crew! I hope there’s room in the TARDIS for my luggage.”
Monsoon is currently on Broadway starring as Matron ‘Mama’ Morton in Chicago.
Davies also praised Monsoon: “In a galaxy of comets and supernovas, here comes the biggest star of all. Jinkx Monsoon is on a collision course with the TARDIS, and Doctor Who will never be the same again!”
The first of the specials starring Tennant will screen in November.
