The dropout has forced a lane to close on the main highway connecting Auckland and Hamilton.

Motorists are being warned of a dropout, which has closed a northbound lane on State Highway 1 between Hamilton and Auckland.

Waka Kotahi said there is a dropout north of the Mercer on-ramp, before Pōkeno, which has closed the right lane.

A temporary speed limit in place. People are asked to drive with caution and expect delays northbound through this area until emergency works can effect repairs.

Waka Kotahi explains a dropout when a section of the road’s surface and foundation has dropped away either from an underslip or other erosion.

“These issues usually occur in hill country with weak geology, or in areas near the coast or rivers. They often happen suddenly during a storm event.”
