On the eve of the August long weekend, the main highway to Lake Winnipeg’s eastern beaches was closed for more than an hour after a crash just south of Birds Hill Park.

Around 6:45 p.m., a white SUV travelling south on Highway 59 was attempting to turn left onto Dunning Road East when it collided with a vehicle travelling north, said Charles Bickford, manager for Esso gas station attached to the 59er restaurant located at the intersection.

Bickford said he saw RCMP, fire and paramedic services, and the STARS ambulance helicopter all arrive on the scene. He saw a woman exit the SUV, dragging a man out of the vehicle before it caught on fire. Police could not be reached for further details.
