What does Rolling Stone magazine have against Celine Dion?
As 2023 dawned, there was shock expressed on social media over the fact the Quebec-born singer was left off the publication’s list of the 200 greatest singers of all time.
As TMZ noted, even Ozzy Osbourne made the list — yes, Ozzy Osbourne.
Rolling Stone called its ranking a “Greatest Singers list, not the Greatest Voices list,” but TMZ wasn’t buying that.
“Even by Rolling Stone’s own standard on what warrants a great ‘singer’ — where they consider the full breadth of their work and showmanship, rather than focus on raw vocal talent — Celine checks all the boxes and then some. She should be on there somewhere,” the website said.
“She is far and away one of the most accomplished and impactful singers in modern history, commercially and critically.”
Jamie Lambert, a British singer, producer and promoter, tweeted, “Respectfully, not including Celine Dion, arguably the best vocal technician of all time, in this list is borderline treasonous.”
Other responses rolled in on Twitter after entertainment news platform Pop Base pointed out the slight.
“How is that possible? Legend,” tweeted one Twitter user. Another called it “a crime against humanity.” “Um, @RollingStone, you done lost your musical mind,” tweeted another.
Some singled out the fact that Taylor Swift made the list. “Like how can you put Michael Jackson at 86, missed out on Dionne Warwick and Celine Dion but put Taylor Swift? what a joke,” tweeted one user.
As for the 54-year-old Dion, who recently postponed some concerts after being diagnosed with a rare neurological disorder known as stiff person syndrome, she hadn’t commented on the controversy. Her most recent Twitter post was a Dec. 24 video wishing everyone Merry Christmas in French and English.
