About 500 homes were without water in Christchurch after a water supply pipe blew.

Christchurch City Council head of three waters Helen Beaumont said a 300-millimetre pipe blew on Port Hills Rd, between Chapmans Rd and the overbridge, just after 10am on Wednesday.

“Our contractor was onsite quickly and is currently working to make a repair as quickly as possible.”

About 500 properties were believed to be without water initially.

“We have worked hard to make changes in our network and these have enabled us to restore services to the majority of residential and commercial properties in the affected area,” a council spokesperson said later on Wednesday.

“However there still will be a small number without water until the repair is complete. We expect this will be by approximately 9pm [on Wednesday].”

Investigations into the cause of the fault were continuing, Beaumont said.
