Are you celebrating the King’s coronation? How?

WRITE ON STUFF: We all love an excuse for a party, and many across New Zealand will have plans to celebrate King Charles taking the throne alongside Camilla, the queen consort.

King Charles III will be offically crowned on Saturday (NZ time) at Westminster Abbey.

It will be the first coronation ceremony since Queen Elizabeth II’s in 1953.

In other words, it’s a very big deal for Great Britain and the rest of the Commonwealth.

King Charles himself may be rubbing his hands together for a party of his own, albeit a scaled-down one compared to his mother’s coronation 70 years ago.

While Charles wants to show the monarchy is still relevant in modern, multi-cultural Britain, he has said he plans to slim down the institution. The coronation is expected to reflect that with a shorter, less extravagant ceremony than the three-hour service that installed Elizabeth II.

The ceremony will be steeped in ancient traditions and adorned with royal regalia from the Crown Jewels, but will also feature its own bespoke emoji, reflecting the first British crowning of the social media era. Queen Elizabeth II’s was the first coronation televised 70 years ago.

In one break with tradition, Charles and Camilla, the queen consort, will roll out of Buckingham Palace in the horse-drawn gilded black Diamond Jubilee State Coach built for Elizabeth’s 60th anniversary. It has heat, air conditioning, power windows and a suspension system that will provide a comfier ride than his mother’s accommodations for her enthronement.

Tom Cruise and and Winnie the Pooh are amongst the stars taking part in the King’s coronation concert on May 7.

Confirmed performers include British pop group Take That, international superstar Lionel Richie, global pop icon Katy Perry, international opera star Andrea Bocelli, Welsh bass-baritone Sir Bryn Terfel, singer/songwriter Freya Ridings and classical-soul composer/producer Alexis Ffrench. Former Pussycat Dolls frontwoman Nicole Scherzinger has also been confirmed to join the celebration.

King Charles and Camilla have chosen a quiche to be the signature dish at the coronation. The recipe for the quiche, posted on the royals’ website, features spinach, broad beans, cheese and tarragon.
