Shopping has resumed at an Auckland mall that was evacuated earlier after a fire apparently started in one of the stores.

The fire service responded to a structure fire at NorthWest Shopping Centre in Westgate at 4.07pm, which was busy with Christmas shoppers gearing up for the big day.

Eight fire trucks and an operational support unit were at the scene, a Fire and Emergency spokesperson said.

Logan James said shoppers began to leave the mall when an electrical smell started near the 2Degrees store in the mall.

“There was nothing really to see. No smoke or anything visible,” James said.

”Police were notified just after 4pm that smoke had been seen in one of the shops in the mall,” a police spokesperson said.
