It’s shaping up to be a particularly busy year for Drake.
In June, the 34-year-old Toronto artist released his seventh studio album, the dance-oriented “Honestly, Nevermind,” which debuted at the top of the U.S. Billboard 200, becoming his eleventh U.S. number-one project.
A month later, he treated the city to the “October World Weekend,” which included a Young Money reunion show with Lil Wayne and Nicki Minaj and a small-venue event that featured a dozen of the biggest names in Canadian hip-hop and R&B history.
On Friday, Drake will release his second studio album of the year, this one a collaboration with Atlanta rapper 21 Savage.
There are few details about the surprise release so far. Titled “Her Loss,” the project was supposed to drop on Oct. 28, but was delayed a week after OVO producer Noah ‘40’ Shebib contracted COVID-19.
Drake and 21 announced the album in October with the release of a music video for the “Honestly, Nevermind” standout “Jimmy Crooks.” Midway through the video, which shows the two rappers standing in front of a large video screen, the album’s title and release date appear in large typography.
The two artists shared the album’s cover art on Wednesday night, which features a portrait of the model Qui Yasuka a.k.a. Suki Baby.
In the lead up to the project release, Drake and 21 have shared a series of satirical or comedic images and video clips.
On Sunday night, in a joint Instagram post, they shared a doctored cover of Vogue Magazine, with the caption: “Me and my brother on newsstands tomorrow!! Thanks @voguemagazine and Anna Wintour for the love and support on this historic moment. Her Loss Nov 4th.”
On Wednesday, they posted a fake clip teasing an NPR “Tiny Desk” concert. NPR Music responded by tweeting: “let’s do it forreal tho.”
There is also a clip of the rappers chatting with Howard Stern, and one of 21 Savage doing a satirical Vogue “In The Bag” segment.
“Jimmy Crooks” was not the first time Drake and 21 have collaborated. The two previously linked up on the Drake tracks “Sneakin’” and “Knife Talk,” and the 21 Savage track “Mr. Right Now.”
Born Shéyaa Bin Abraham-Joseph, 21 Savage exploded on the scene in 2016 with the release of “Savage Mode,” a critically-acclaimed collaboration with producer Metro Boomin that Vulture described as “gleefully ultraviolent and pridefully indulgent.”
The 30-year-old’s last album, “Savage Mode II,” came out in 2020.
