Fire, police and Hato Hone St John respond to a single vehicle crash on West St where the occupant had to be cut out of the vehicle.

Firefighters have had to cut the roof off of a car in order to get the driver out of the vehicle after they crashed in Palmerston North’s West End on Wednesday afternoon.

A police spokesperson said the single-vehicle crash was reported at 1.36pm on West St.

One person was in a serious condition, they said.

Two fire crews from Palmerston North were sent to the scene where they had to cut the roof off the car in order to get the driver out, Fire and Emergency New Zealand central shift manager Carlos Dempsey said.

The car had hit a bus stop and a tree, Dempsey said.

A reporter at the scene said the bus stop was shattered and police had cordoned off the area.

Ambulance officers assessed and treated one patient who was transported to Palmerston North Hospital in a serious condition, a Hato Hone St John spokesperson said.
