Tesla topped the overall monthly vehicle registration figures for the first time in September.

As reported yesterday, the vehicle registration figures for September paint a fairly bleak picture for the industry with another month of soft sales.

Like August, September’s result is down on the previous year, in this case 26.7% lower, or 14,878 units. In total, September saw 10,909 units registered.

“September’s result is likely caused by both tougher economic conditions and continued uncertainty for the future of the Clean Car Discount, currently hinging upon the upcoming election result,” said Motor Industry Association chief, Aimee Wiley.

“Such uncertainty considerably impacted consumer demand in September. It comes as no surprise that product attracting rebates accelerated significantly, whilst demand for product attracting fees slumped.”

The MIA figures also confirmed that the Tesla Model Y did indeed head the month, heralding a big shift toward electrification, and the first time in many months since a ute wasn’t the most popular vehicle of the month.

In fact, the Ford Ranger dropped to third in the monthly standings with 605 units registered. The Model Y notched 697 units, followed by the Toyota RAV4 with 683 units. Following the Ranger was the Toyota Hilux at 540 units, then the Toyota Yaris Cross at 316 units, Mitsubishi ASX (286), Toyota Corolla (269), and the Mitsubishi Outlander (268).

The Ford Ranger is still the most popular vehicle for the year.

The MG4 also turned a respectable result in its first full month on sale with 250 units, according to MIA’s figures.

Ford’s popular workhorse still tops the charts for the year-to-date figures, with 7833 units, followed by the Hilux at 6850 then the RAV4 with 5798 units.

Finally, sales by motive power are as follows: 2067 battery electric vehicles, 768 plug-in hybrids, 2190 hybrids and 5884 pure combustion vehicles.
