Wesmen women drop Canada West semifinal opener

Ansah Odoom hammered a match-high 16 kills to help the top-seeded Trinity Western Spartans rally for a 22-25, 25-17, 25-18, 25-18 triumph over the Winnipeg Wesmen in the opening match of a Canada West women’s volleyball semifinal in Langley, B.C., Thursday night.

Savannah Purdy added 14 kills for the Spartans, who are No. 1 in the U Sports rankings.

Winnipeg, seeded fourth entering the post-season, got 17 kills and 16 digs from first-team conference all-star Emma Parker.

Ashleigh Laube added nine kills for the Wesmen while teammate Taylor Kleysen added eight.

Winnipeg setter Portia Switzer piled up 33 assists while Selva Planincic chipped in with 16 digs.

The teams meet again Friday night with a third match, if necessary, slated for Saturday.
